Description
213 – Land of Little Wooden People – Olvera Street Puppet Theatre in Los Angeles
Paul Walton & Michael O Rourke opened the Olvera Street Puppet Theatre in 1935 and put on performances until 1939. Later in their lives, they created the puppets for the film Lili starring Leslie Caron. Their Olvera Street marionettes, carved from wood, are seen in great detail on the filmstrip.
The show opens with Don Panfilo and Pancho staging a cock fight with Lupita s roosters. Then there s Diane, the beautiful colored singer. Other characters are the little colored janitor, the Love Bug, Jitterbug Orchestra, Cockroach and Mouse Showgirls, Sonje Housefly on skates, and a picture of Walton and O Rourke with their marionettes.
A brief historic look at an unusual entertainment art form.
